One of my favorite places to walk around while living in the DMV area was Georgetown. When Sisca contacted me for portraits, I suggested it as a session location and she was all in!
Sisca was visiting the D.C. area from overseas and wanted to do portraits while she was here. We didn't have much open time based on her schedule, mine, and the make up artist's; so there was no rescheduling due to the forecasted rain! Instead, we embraced it and I bought a clear umbrella from Target. It only sprinkled a bit during the very start of our session: just enough for fun umbrella pictures but not enough to be annoying.
We started on the waterway, borrowed the Starbucks bathroom as a changing room (we had made obligatory coffee purchases at the start of our session), then moved on the the canal. While walking to where the canal would look the best as a backdrop, past orange construction cones, we stopped at different spots on the way that appealed to us. I always love to incorporate color, brick, doors, and patterns. Historic districts usually have wonderful backdrops.
I love having a Make Up Artist on a session with me. Sisca found Alex for her session and she was absolutely amazing! We ended up working together a few more times before I moved to Ohio. It's a great investment for a session. Feeling pampered brings out more confidence, along with being a lot of fun! Having an extra set of eyes looking at hair fly-aways and available for make up retouching during the session is a bonus.
If you are ever on the fence about having a make up artist or hair stylist for a portrait session, do it! You won't regret it.
The Georgetown Canal is just so beautiful. It enhanced Sisca's beauty. Georgetown is a must-go-to when in the D.C. area. Also, there's some amazing food!
I love mixing serious and fun expressions when doing portraits. Mixing different outfits and shirts is also a great way to get more out of your session: different looks showing different sides to your personality and style. This pink, off the shoulder crop top, the high-waisted shorts, and sneakers was a super-cute look for Sisca! We also swapped out the shirt for a few photos at the end. This super cute sunflower top finished off our session. I love the long sleeves with the shorts.
I miss trekking to Georgetown for portrait sessions, but there are beautiful historic districts in almost any city you visit. Dayton has some beautiful historic spots for portraits where you can get similar looks like this session with Sisca.
